Fenton Hatching Eggs & Registernig as a Keeper
« on: April 14, 2009, 12:00 »
New and enthusiastic member... please help!
Having successfully incubated 15 newbies (Polish, Scots Greys, Bantams...) with my neighbour, my friend has had a request to rear some Fentons for a family friend.  Does anybody know where these little darlings can be found? I can find very little information on the breed.  Also, although 50 chickens seemed a lifetime away, it is possible that we may have 50 birds more rapidly than expected (although not too many more even though we have a large orchard for them...).  Has everyone registered with DEFRA/Scottish & Welsh counterparts/?  Would it be an expensive mistake if forgotten (between sales etc.)?  I'm wondering whether it would be worthwhile pre-registering...

I've moved this to henhouse and I'm sure one of the many keepers will be able to help. I'm no where near 50 (yet.....) so don't know the answer myself  ::) :D

Why do they want Fentons? is it the blue eggs? If it is try "cream legbars".

I believe they were interested in Fentons due to the fact that they had reared them before & were keen to obtain the same variety... but I can find nothing on them (I didn't even know it was a blue egg, & I'm keen to only rear 'what I know'!!!)

Looking at their site they only sell them as POL.  Yoou could try contacting them for some hatching eggs though.  They look very similar to Cream Legbars.

We only have 10 hens, (15 at highest) but as we are a school I felt it would be a good idea to register with DEFRA Poultry register anyway - this was to allay any "oh my god, won't my kids catch bird flu?" fears for parents.

It didn't cost us anything.

I've registered with DEFRA  It's slightly confusing to fill in ,but nothing major.  We only have 9 chickens and 4 ducks!  actually better re-update as 2 ducklings as well
