Strange white grubs
« on: May 31, 2010, 09:46 »
Im sorry but Im not able to provide a picture but I have found some white grubs in a pot of old compost. Ive googled but have not been able to find them. They seem to have wings or wing buds on their sides. It gives them the appearance of angels. Im thinking that as an adult these would probably be wing cases? Can you help. I havent got rid of them as if they are harmless I dont like to kill things.  Thanks
Oh for those halcyon days of England long ago

White grubs in pots tends to suggest vine weevil to me, but your description doesn't quite fit with that.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If they are vine weevil grubs the birds will get rid of them for you.
Our friendly robin stuffed himself on over 50 from my strawberry pot  :D

It could be the pre-pupal stage of vine weevil - these have something akin to wing cases plus definite legs, and are almost white.  I dug a load out of some strawberry pots last week.  The pupae are the same, only motionless and brown.  I think the adults would normally have hatched by now, but everything seems to be late this year.  If I see any more, I'll try to get a photo.

I agree with Sarah -- the grubs of vine weevils pupate, and these show wigs in outline on the white case.
