I am not aware of a small variety. There are only the two of us as well but we always ate ours in one go. You could always pick the fruits when they are not fully grown at about 6 inches. Having said that, I guess that a cut fruit would last for a few days in a plastic bag in the fridge but my wife tells me that we haven't done that.

Just to say reading this has made me very hungry!  As a novice I also have never heard of this but will search some out for next year.  Thanks for the info

The squash is ready when the fruit stem starts to dry out, changing colour and the foliage starts to die down.
