Free Space What to grow.
« on: March 16, 2015, 21:08 »
Hi to my fellow growers.

I am totally new to the world of growing.
Having recently been given a greenhouse 6' by 10'
I have planted (in propagators) tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, chillies and some pumpkins and courgettes for outside.

I reckon I will have a good space and completely lost as to what to grow.
Any ideas please, got to be new to growing friendly and crop quite heavy.
My tribe will eat anything and I welcome unusual fruits/veg.

Your help and input is greenly received.
its good to get dirty.

How about some aubergines and some herbs that like a bit of warm like basil, dill, tarragon. Good luck and enjoy your new hobby.

Just a word of caution there.... your pumpkin plants will be huge by the time the weather is warm enough for them to be planted outside, so don't over estimate how many other plants you can fit in your greenhouse, will you?  :nowink:

Cut and come again salad leaves are always a good value early crop in the greenhouse and economical on space too  :D

Blueberries can be outside in acid soil.

Blueberries bad idea I reckon - apart from needing ericaceous soil I believe they need to be exposed to winter frosts, are insect pollinated. and you really need more than one plant to get good fruit set. Keeping them sufficiently well watered could also be problem.

Don't want to be a party-pooper, but even allowing for the crops you intend to grow outside, I think you've got plenty there for a 10 X 6 greenhouse, although I don't of course know how many of each you are planning to grow.

Tempting though it is to pack things in, overcrowding is something to avoid, especially for someone new to it.

If you decide you have got some space, I'd second sweet potatoes - you won't get a huge crop from a couple of plants, but they are something different and quite attractive, despite trying to take over the entire greenhouse when I grew them!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Ahh the early season illusion of space  :D

I left myself this note last year http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=113434.msg1325081#msg1325081 for when I look at the empty greenhouses and think "I can fit loads in there".

My bottom greenhouse is 8'x10' the top 6'x10', I'll be doing my best to stick to those limits and fill any spaces with herbs and salads.

i do early dwarf french beans, lettuce and new potatoes. these will be done by time the summer crops are starting to fill the space.

i also find it can be useful to have a little space left spare so you can get a quick crop if you can see you're going to have a gap (i'm useless at succession sowing)
