Hanging baskets
« on: December 18, 2016, 15:42 »
I have no flowers from Sep to March and therefore no insects visiting my garden.
I want to get some hanging baskets and put some good native plants in the them
A) I live in the South East
B) Some will be in full sun others in heavy shade.  Any ideas (I don't have any space to plant any more plants in the garden

There aren't many nectar sources over that period, but what about native violets, primroses and cowslips and a selection of early bulbs like crocus and snowdrops, or woodland species like wood anemones.

You could mix in some bedding violas and primroses if you want.  Just go for the ones with simple open flowers, not the double flowered fancier ones  :)

It's usually pansies here, LG.

So many colours, and they seem to love being bashed around, and then survive even more!

Thank you both, which of the options would be best for deep shade?

If you are looking for shade plants, okay they may not be the prettiest things, but my SIL wired 2 hanging baskets together, with moss and compost in between and planted sempervivums.  They looked lovely when they covered the baskets.  And some of them do flower too.

Violets and primroses usually manage OK in shade.

I usually find violas are a lot more hardy in baskets in the winter as the larger petals of pansy's get damaged by wind from exposure, they will take some shade as well. There are some nice trailing varieties available these days.

Over the winter the wet is the worst enemy with hanging basket's so make sure they're well drained and not overwatered. Pansy's don't like sitting in cold wet conditions overwinter and neither do bulbs.
