Title: Injured Chicken Update
Post by: JMF on May 11, 2012, 12:13
Posted a thread last week after a fox attacked our little pekin bantam following great advice she is slowly improving now have her in a dog cage but still inside and take her out during day to be with other girls - but with run between them as I think they make peck her.  However, she will stand for a while but will not walk - we have checked her leg and can find no breaks but it is obviously still very painful - during the week she did hop down some steps - if there was a break would she be able to stand on it any advice please.  Wings seem ok as well.

Try her with the others, she may get comfort from their company. If they peck then move. They will, of course knock her over, but that is just chook thoughtlessness and clumsiness.
She may have a cracked bone which will be painful and you may see dark lines around this in the leg. There isn't much you can do directly, but, as she is moving then it will probably heal in a few weeks and you'll see a small swelling around the area as it heals and she picks up. They often stand on one leg anyway, so she'll probably manage by hopping and will slowly move her leg. When this has happened to ours (usually because they fall off walls) then I've rubbed a little ibuprofen gel into the bare skin above her leg under the wing. A little savlon there may be needed as the raised foot may rub against the skin. Best of luck

it could also be a sprain in which case time will heal it.
