Title: Black Plastic for growing
Post by: Digger the Dog on April 08, 2018, 10:03
Can anyone point me to a supplier of black plastic suitable for covering Potatoes and to help cut down water evaporation?
I've looked at the usual places like eBay but the smallest quantities of plastic seem to be huge and really need mechanical handling.

Also, what sort of thickness of black plastic should we go for?

Not sure of a source, but you used to be able to get a bio degradable paper just for that purpose. Trouble with  polythene, you wouldn’t get any water going through, just running off, so the plants would have to rely on you for all their water, which in my book would be more work.

Just seen your other post about watering the plot re soaker hose etc. Have a read up on mulching to prevent water evaporation, I rarely if ever water my potatoes, or even most of my crops but when I do I thoroughly soak them & if available give them a good mulch. Look at Charles Dowding website.
