hedges
« on: June 01, 2010, 12:15 »
I have a hedge row that is looking very sorry for it's self. It has a lot of brown patchs and looks very dry but we have had a bit of rain lately. Some of the leafs look like they have been eaten but i have not found  bugs or caterpillars on them. Any ideas?

You don't say how long your hedge is? I was going to advise a trim and a very good watering!!!

What plant is the hedge from?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

The hedge is about 12 feet long and I have just trimed it. I have no idea what type it was here when I move in.

Conifer? Deciduous?

here a lot of the conifer hedges are die ing back big time, Iwas told it's a fungus. I tried cutting out the worst bits and hoped to train new growth over the gaps, but it looks as if it is spreading anyway :(

Conifers can also be attacked by a conifer aphid: dieback occurs but aphids don't eat bits out of the leaves.

It is often very dry at the base of hedges, even with a considerable amount of rain, as the hedge acts as an umbrella.  I'd certainly endorse VC's suggestion of a good drink (for the plant!) but wouldn't necessarily suggest a trim if it's a conifer - not sure that they regrow, whereas deciduous ones should do so.
