Planting Shallots Now........
« on: January 12, 2012, 18:35 »
........any good reason not to?
Wandering around Northamptonshire today, I managed to pick up a few packets of Jermor shallots reduced to 50p. Some were sprouting nicely and I thought the sooner in the ground the better; soil conditions are nice and damp only, though I noticed that we are heading for three or four nights of frost; the first spell of the winter.  :)

Many have planted them already, some might even be considering this getting late, although it isn't. Now is fine. :)

If it helps, I didn't plant our shallots until the end of April in our first year and they were just fine

Later than others of course, but a good crop  8)

I think I plonked mine in during February or maybe March.

Daft it maybe but I started the lot off in deep trays as I wasn't ready to sort the plot out. By the time the ground was ready they were sprouting beautifully and had loads of roots. They transplanted well and produced a bumper crop.

Ours aren't in yet. Waiting for the ground to dry out a little first...... ::) All I can say is, I'm glad we haven't got heavy soil!
