Where to buy shallots and garlic for planting?
« on: October 16, 2008, 08:42 »
Hi,
I haven't  manage to find any garlic or shallots to plant in my garden centre or Wilkos. Where does everyone else buy theirs, I was hoping to avoid the internet because I begrudge postage charges!

Hi Sharon, I  use a local independent Garden centre. They  specialise on allotment stuff, but have you tried looking at other allotment sites local to you? They may have their own shops selling such like? :)

Your nearest allotment shop  :D

Dobbies have them in.  Wilko will be stocking them from January, that's what I was told at our local branch  :D

They'll be the summer ones though, not the winter ones.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I bought some from Dobies £3.75 for two bulbs (but the postage was only 95p)

Then I saw some in my allotment shop for only 25p per bulb !

As we are going to the Isle of Wight in November, I am planning to visit the Garlic Farm in the hope that their seed garlic is cheaper there than their internet prices.
Does anyone know what their IoW shop prices are like?
Try to be organic ...sort of ...most of the time ...

Yes I was doing this until the man at my local garden centre had the cheek to charge £7.50 for a spray bottle of roundup then Parsley for £3.00 a pot. I would fully support local buisnesses but when they put the prices up so high compared to larger shops I wont stand for it.

Well. I always try to support local business..... (If I can afford too! )
But, this garden centre has always given great value for money IMHO.
Just purchased 3 very large bulbs of Germidour garlic for £2.49.....
Then, after being quoted £25 for a 2-3 ton load of manure by my local small holder, I noticed they (the garden centre), had a special offer on grazing Rye.... £1.55 for 12Sq mtrs????
 I  bought The Rye, - Have I done the right thing? : :?  :?
 What does everyone think..

I found the cheapest place by far was a guy on one of our local markets(Loughborough)although a little far for you to travel it's worth checking the markets in you area.
