Shallots rotting before planting

I lost a few this year due to them getting damp through my own fault. I always store mine in the light but I don't think the dark would have caused a problem.

Were they in a bag or spread out, if they were in a bag and one rotted it would likely spread to the others fairly quickly. I spread mine out a bit in a 'blue mushroom tray' so they plenty of air around them. At least on the positive side you still have time to get more.

Mine are saved from previous years but if I was buying I would buy from a nursery that sells them loose, you can then choose your own and make sure they are all firm The bags you buy in garden centres make it difficult to check the condition of all the bulbs.
