Just lost our beautiful Henrietta
« on: July 03, 2011, 15:53 »
I found her under the house looking very sorry for herself, on closer inspeaction she was gurgling and gasping for air.

She had been a bit quite of late, but not so much that I was concerned.  Having just nursed another through sour crop I thought that maybe she had the same.

My OH picked her up but she started gasping more.  She was bubbling clear liquid and becoimg very floppy.

10 minutes later she had gone.......so very sad.

She was my little boy's (and secretly mine) favourite and as yet I have not had to heart to tell him :-(

Could she have had sour crop that had been missed by us and had progressed?

I can't help with any diagnosis I'm afraid, I just wanted to say how sorry I was to hear of your sad loss. Henrietta is now in Chookie Heaven with all of our babies. She will be in very good company.

Thank you for your replies.

She was a beautiful girlie with a great little personality...I am just worried that I have let her down when she needed me, by not spotting she was that ill beforehand  :(

It was horrible to see her like that gasping for air.....

Really sorry about your girl.  :( At least you were with her at the end. Big hugs xx

Hens are very good at hiding when they feel unwell.  You have nothing to feel guilty about.  You gave her a loving home and a good life.  The end seemed to be quick and she probably would not have felt much pain.   As CluckyChicken says, at least you were with her at the end.

Thank you all for your kind words.

Does anybody know if there are any preventative actions I can take to stop Sour Crop happening in the first place.  Whilst I am not 100% sure thats what had happened to her, I have had 2 others have it.  One I managed to nurse through, the other we lost as well.

Thanks

When mine had sour crop, I think it was through eating longer grass.
Think it must have got 'tangled up' inside.  So one thing I would say, is keep them away from long grass.  ;)
I'm not young enough to know everything!
