Clearing flattened grass?
« on: September 01, 2009, 17:23 »
Any advice on this?  My plot has really long grass/weeds all over it, I managed to get hold of a cordless strimmer which is fine for the bits which are upright but the majority of it has all been walked all over and is flattened to the ground.  Hence impossible to strim.

Tempted to just put weed killer all over it but would rather not really! so any other suggestions as to how I could clear it?

Been pulling chunks up with my hands but needless to say it takes forever.

Hire an Allen scythe, cut it, burn it then weedkill the regrowth?

Can you rake the flattened grass in the opposite direction to which it is lying?this may help you to strim.

One mattock, a bit of hard graft and a little bit at a time.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

Roundup

The OP was asking for alternatives to weedkiller  ???
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I use a spade and kind of 'slice' the bottom of the grass/top of the roots.  This leaves flat soil with weed roots in it - then it is up to you!

A powerful petrol mower and you cut on the highest setting then lower the blades bit by bit till it's really short. Then it's easy to take the top off the soil or dig it in picking out roots as you go.

If there is an area you don't need yet cover it with weighted down cardboard and by next spring there will be hardly anything left except bare soil.

I speak from experience as that is what we had to do here.
