Does having a Fox resident in the area of my allotment make it a bad idea to use either of these? First of all, chicken lovers, there are no chooks allowed on our site so that's not the issue; but I have heard that putting these in your soil can attract Foxes who will then dig up the plot looking for potential prey.

If so, is there anything else I should be avoiding, and are there any effective substitutes that I can use in their place?

There are urban foxes living in my area and I had to stop using FBB thanks to repeated digging - dried chicken manure was not quite as bad because although they dug a few times they did seem to learn quite quickly that it tasted like sh......you know what!

Growmore is an obvious alternative if you find your foxes are slow learners when it comes to PCM.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Cubs seem to be more aof a problem that adult foxes.

On our school plot the little lovelies wreak havoc if we use chicken pellets

I use chicket pellets and also used wood shavings from the chicken coop as a mulch.  The mulch is top up layers to well rotted shavings around soft fruit so doesn't affect nitrogen levels in the soil and is well peppered with non-pelleted chicken manure  :)

Our plot foxes leave both well alone but anyone who tries BF&B tends to find craters everywhere.  Bonemeal is the same, they go mad for it and have dug up a few soft fruit bushes that people have put in  ::)

Eggshells in compost is another trigger for them BTW Hesse  :)

I'd forgotten about the issues with eggshells. Made the mistake of including these in the kitchen waste I put in the bean trench last Spring --- crater -land followed  ???

Oh No! I've been putting egg shells in my compost for the past two months!

I've been finding a few small craters in newly dug over beds though I suspect that these are cats rather than foxes using my beds as a public convenience! I was considering getting one of those ultrasonic infra-red scarer type thingymajigs to deal with them. Would they maybe work on the foxes too?

Ahhhh...!  So that must be what is digging on my plot, the little blighter!!

I've got a huge yellow dog (see my profile pic) who in reality is as yellow as cowardly custard but do you think his massive paw prints ;o) and scent will put off Foxy Loxy from coming in to my plot?  He's with me everytime I visit and he roams round the plot as he pleases. I'm presuming the fox is jumping with ease over the chicken wire fence and gate to get in there, I'm familiar with how agile these creatures are.

Well I guess time will tell. If he comes back digging holes I'll let you know, if not you can all borrow the big yellow bellied dog if you like  :D

I've also heard human wee works as a deterrant too... but only mens!!!  Pfft!  ::)
