blood fish and bone??
« on: February 10, 2011, 16:27 »
I found an opened bag of blood, fish and bone in my shed when I was tidying up tother day-  not sure how old it is. Do you think it's ok to use -- and how would u use it?
Ive also got chicken manure pellets--  Im interested to know recommendations on their use too.  The CMPs are quite niffy and Im not sure Id get away with using them at school?? How long b4 the pong subsides?? Any ideas welcomed  :) Thanks

I would use it - what have you got to lose other than a slight loss if any in nutrients. CMPs should be ok too but the pong....not sure how long it lasts.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I'd use both as there's no real shelf life on them. As for the pong of CMP, it'll go away soon after it's spread and had some air, within a day or two.

What is it useful for though?  Will it help revive my over winter onions?

It is a good general fertiliser, it can go round anything :)

A quote from yours truly about a year ago:

"Pelleted chicken manure has an average analysis of 4-2.5-2.5 (NPK). Growmore, by comparison is 7-7-7, so clearly PCM is higher in nitrogen than a truly "balanced" fertiliser.

That's pretty good for most vegetables even though some might argue the nitrogen is a bit high for some root crops, but it's a widely used (and sustainable) general fertiliser and I wouldn't get hung-up too much about the chemistry. It's good stuff"

(Would also point out that the analysis is based on the proportions of the 3 main elements by weight, so if you were to weigh it before using you would need around twice as much PCM as Growmore to achieve the same effect. Not critical though as long as you more or less follow the instructions!)  :)

I thought Benandbill was only asking about the BF&B side of things

Thanks mumofstig, yep, I was only asking about the Blood, Fish & Bone for my onions.  I should have made that clear though..  All useful info though and I will give it a try on them if they're any more withered when I go down next.  I put groworganic on them on Sunday and was hoping we'd have a bit of rain, don't think we've had much though down here in Ponty.

Nothing to apologise for B&B (I thought I was replying to fisher's original post!)

I'm always a bit careful with 'old bags' of stuff, ever since I found an old open and nearly empty sack of '6x'.

Thinking it was so old it would have lost it's 'strength', I spread some in the greenhouse, and the ammonia immediately killed everything off; almost while I watched!

BF and B sounds much better at not killing your tender greenhouse plants though! Not sure about the chicken manure - others will know better than me!

I used a old bag of chicken manure pellets that had let the rain in and gone into a stinking paste. Wonderful stuff! (Smell goes quite quickly but I was a bit honky..........)
