Hi everyone...and a carrot bug question!
« on: November 23, 2008, 13:18 »
Hi, i'm new here, just registered.

It was my first year of having my own garden this year, i grew many varieties of vegetables -not all successful but practice makes perfect.

I cant complain about the cabbage whites ruining my cabbage cauliflower and sprout plants, that was my fault for being un prepaired and/or lazy!

My climbing beans were outstanding in the greenhouse, producing a crop for weeks on end and supplying enough seed for next year!

The chillies also amazed me even in their state of neglect- which they seemed to enjoy more than daily watering they produced far too many fruits for just us.

The beetroot although few in number and a tad small were huge in flavour.

Anyway enough rambling, i have a question...

I grew a fly resisitant variety of carrot, i believe they were called flyaway.
They grew nicely and were long, thick and very productive, however, every root had small whitish grey beetle like insects around 2mm in size right where the stalk joined the root. Although this didnt seem to affect the root itself, they were particularly unpleasant looking and of putting.
I'm sure they're not carrot root fly, or rust fly, and i know they werent white fly- Does anyone have any suggestions please!?

Sorry to go on.

Jonathan

Mealy aphid?

I've had them on carrots in the past. Shown here on a brassica...

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If they are like the ones in the picture on a cabbage leaf then what you have are carrot root aphids. They live in the base of carrots but I think they do little harm unless they overwhelm the plants. Not a lot you can do to stop them.
