Both are best scratched into the surface upon application.

About two weeks before planting I would say.

Actually, bonemeal takes about 6 months to fully break down and become useable by plants, but by constantly applying it there's always some in available form.
Title: Bone and animals ie the fox etc.

I live well in the countryside hence we do have all kinds of animals about the place of an evening so smell is their way of finding food,
Bone has one hell of a smell (just stick your nose in the bag and you,ll see what I mean) So I would dig all blood/fish /bone into the ground to keep the rodents and animals from digging.

As has been said bone is a slow acting feed and so I feel is better underground anyway.

Hope this helps
Regards Danny.
