Cleaning up Jam Jars
« on: October 29, 2009, 12:46 »
Aldi have Sticky Stuff Remover on special offer this week.  Says on the label it removes labels, glue etc from glass amongst other substrates.

I have bought a bottle to see if it will clean the glue off jam jars, so they can be reused rather than recycled as a lost cause.

Nail varnish remover is also another good one.  Removed the sticky residue when the girls stuck their homemade decorations up on the windows one year with sellotape.

Yes, I have previously tried the white spirit and nail varnish remover route, with variable results.

I tested a very stubborn jar last night and after wrapping a rag wetted with the cleaner, the glue came off really easily.  Also it has a more pleasant smell than nail varnish remover.

My mum just soaks her jars in a tub of hot water and liquid soap for about 2 days and everything comes off nicely. I'm lazier and throw mine into the dishwasher. Soon as the cycle is finished I peel off the label and wipe off the sticky stuff. Anything else gets a bit of nail polish remover wiped over it.
