Mark on comb?
« on: October 20, 2008, 14:06 »
Just had this mail from Miller, who has some of our chickens.  Anyone know what this could be?  The only marks our lot seem to have on combs are where they've had a scrap!

One of the girls has got a dark patch appeared on one side of her comb - perfectly ok in every other way, galloping round the garden all weekend, eating well, laying etc.

Had a quick look (wasn't impressed being picked up when the others had the run of the garden!) and it is about the size of half your little finger nail and almost black (not a scab) and not raised? Could it be a fungal infection?   None of the others have it - strange!

Mmmm, I think its a peck mark too, doubt if its frost bite yet, and Miller agrees with the peck idea as she's just let me know there was a tussle (sp?) over a tomato!!!!  thanks everyone!

Thanks GA - busy day yesterday - doesn't appear to have changed any since yesterday so maybe it was a peck in the fight over a tomato they nicked off a the plant!

Will just keep an eye on her - must be like a blood blister/bruise as it's not scabby at all - she's still pelting round like a mad thing even in all the rain yesterday so can't be much up  :D  laying and esting/pooping normally (lots!)

Edit to add  - tried to take pic but mark is so small it didn't really come out with cheapo digi camera - was going to try with better one last night but it was hammering down

After you saying about that mark Miller, I noticed on Rosie's comb, she has a little black bit, right on one of the tips of the comb, I think she must have put her head just inside either the turkey run or the younger Amberlinks!!!!    :D  :D
