  Need to choose a tall grassy plant for children's garden... bamboo was suggested - but the container is an old sandbox about 10" deep and I believe it would take over the world!
I'm wondering about a grass.. I've got lots of pheasant grass (I think) which is soft and moves nicely.. but a taller more dramatic one could be good.  It would need to be nice to touch- Some are a bit scratchy aren't they?
Suggestions please!

Pennisetums are soft and rustly, and have beautiful coloured seeds heads too

How about varieties of Stipa? There are many of them and with different plume heads. Stipa gigantea has corn-coloured heads and tenuissima has white feathery ones. Giggle images and the RHS website for suitable ones along with their care and maintenance as they are lovely and should have the height you want. They are also mostly perennial, and the children will love feeling them, also running their hands through the grassy leaves at the base in spring to remove the old stuff. They should do ok in pots but would suggest using quite a big pot to allow them to expand, also use a plastic pot so you can move it if needed. You could plant crocuses and / or tiny narcissi for spring colour around the sides. Pennisetums are lovely too but can be a bit difficult to keep alive over winter, but worth a try.

Thanky for suggestions - which I am considering.  I also saw Miscanthus oligostachyus recommended so I'll consult with the teacher to see which she prefers!

Dierama pulcherrimum is grassy looking but not a grass because it has the most beautiful pendant pink flowers.  Also called Angel's fishing rod.

Yes They are lovely.  I have one by my pond at home.  May be a bit tall for what we want -and they take time to establish (so I read!)  Nice idea tho ....Thanks

Have to choose something that the children can run their hands over on the way past, as they will enjoy that
