Poorly hen

Hello, I need some advise on what to do with my poorly hen. she is an ex-batt that is slowly going downhill. Yesterday morning I found her in the shed looking very sad. Not interested in food, stood there very fluffed up and looking very fed up with life. Have had a good check and cant find any sign of any lice, mites etc. No sign of an egg being stuck. Her crop was very full as though she had just had a good feed, does anyone have any idea of how to remove the food from there in case that is the problem?

They were all wormed with flubenvet 3 weeks ago and up to yesterday she was a happy and healthy hen.

she isnt interested in food or water (even when I tried hand feeding her) and doesnt cluck or object when i picked her up and put her in solitary in the garage. None of the other ronnies are showing any signs of problems.

I noticed this morning that her comb seems to be shrinking and going purple on the ends.

Has anyone come across this before or have any ideas, I have a feeling she may have to go the way of poor Rudolph and visit the big hen shed in the sky, but would be grateful for your comments.

That's such a shame.

It's difficult to know what to do if you're not sure what the problem is.

Crop problems eg sour crop can be treated and breathing problems causing the blueness can be treated, but in an ex-battery hen they have has such a difficult life there is often nothing effective that can be done

Aunty, thanks for the advice, unfortunately we found her in no fit state to try anything late friday afternoon, so my husband put her out of her misery. She in a better place now

I am so sorry, but good on you. At least she has been able to experience freedom and do what chickens ought too. Must have taken a lot of courage to let her go. :cry:

aww so sorry. but that's what makes a wonderful and responsible animal owner. someone who puts them first.

the right choice for them is not always whats best for us.
