Well I'm just waiting to get my keys to the allotment site (the high fence and hidden guard towers give the appearance of Stlag Luft 3) but I'm undaunted... However, I know the plot has not been used for about a year and the ground is basically clay... so I gues it may be a "little tough" to start.

So is it worth investing in a rotavator ot renting?  If it is the former can anyone advise on a what is a decent (but of course inexpensive) petrol model and where to get one.

Also does anyone have any thoughts on how far down I need to think about digging, most of the smaller rotavators appear to go down about a foot, is this enough to break up the soil where there is heavy clay?...

Any other tips greatly appreciated.

have the allotment association got access to one
ask around the site or other nearby sites
we are fortunate to have a chap with some sort of tractor mounted affair.
got him booked for as soon as he's done some work on it.

Ah now a tractor... that was my first idea but her ladyship insisted that an allotment plot didn't warranty the purchase of a John Deere.... I think she was a fraid I'd take her to Sainsburys in it!?!?...

Good idea on checking what the "locals" may already have...once I have the keys of course.
