When we took over our plot last year, we discovered, amongst the weeds etc, this bag of super-phosphate.

It  has been opened on one corner and is almost full, and, although the contents are a bit damp, it seems to be OK.

Is this worth using, or would it's qualities have deteriorated at all? I don't know how long it had been there, but assume several months at least!

Just because it is free you do not have to use it.

superphosphate fertilisers are mineral based so should not "go off" as such.  Apply it round the soil surface of tomato and flowering plants and it will encourage a stronger root system.  As the fertiliser is made from rock, it contains other minerals such as calcium, magnesium, manganese and others in small quantities.  It will make the soil slightly more acidic but nothing too dire

The plot isn't in very good heart, because it had been left derelict for a couple of years, and was covered in couch grass and rubbish. We didn't have time to get much more than a bag of 6X onto it as we had no compost from the previous year of course.

This year, I reckon the soil needs a helping hand to get us through the season, and with the new compost and some 'black gold', which we've acquired from nearby stables, next year will see the soil in much better nick!
