SUPER SIZE VEG DOES IT TASTE NICE
« on: September 09, 2008, 16:49 »
now iam a beginner at this game of growing veg infact i aint planted anything yet.

so my question is this

why the fascination with super size veg like onion and carrots etc

when the majority of people say the smaller the veg the better the taste

i understand the competition side of things and its for the glory

buts whats the point of putting so much time and effort in to something that you either can not eat or wont eat.

One of my allotment neighbours is growing a giant pumpkin - not to eat but for his kids to carve for 31 October...

People also grow supersize veggies to enter competitions for - you've guessed it - biggest in class!

Sometimes supersize veggies happen because you just plain miss spotting them among all that luxuriant foliage (I had a courgette which had become a marrow - and I don't like marrow!)

I can only vouch for biggish onions and they are just as good as normal ones, and just about as strong,I suppose it's because they are mostly water and don't go woody like some big carrots/parsnips might do.

I did grow a 115lb pumpkin once and that was completely hollow and looked really fibrous.

Didn't eat it but made a cracking lantern out of it though.

What's the point of train spotting or other so called perceived pointless activities ???

If someone gets pleasure from growing something enormous that other people find remarkable or doing something that they get personal satisfaction from then what's the problem.

Whatever makes you happy is what I say.

Most "Giant Veg" growers grow the normal sized stuff too,It's just a laugh to try and grow something enormous.

If I could grow a completely inedible pumpkin the size of a transit van I'd do it tomorrow.

It's a challenge and it's good fun to do too.

115lb pumpkin    how on earth did you get it home

As for the giant veg thing I suppose it's just for the pleasure of doing something different, better than mugging old ladies.

Well you'll always have to spend a bit more money on specialist "Big" seeds.

And there is no guarantee of success.

But that's true with normal veg seed too.

If you buy the best "normal Veg"  F1 Hybrids and newer varieties which have been specifically bred for better yields etc you'll have to pay more for them too.

But theres no guarantee they'll work either,if you have a bad year.

You can buy "show type" veg seeds for less than some of the newer "normal" veg seeds and you don't have to add any extra ingredients to grow a big 'un so you can actually pay less than growing a bog standard variety.

It's a misconception that you have to spend a packet to grow a big 'un.

P.S Richyrich here's the pics of my 2 best pumpkins.

115lb and 96lb.

I'll never grow anymore but had to give it a go.

The head's been removed to conceal my beautiful face, but you can see it's me due to my unkempt chin fungus.

Oh and these were just bog standard Atlantic Giant grown in soil which had loads of cow muck added and they were £2.00 for 10 seeds.

So they cost me 20p each.

thing about growing giant veg is its a challenge to do it
its like the challenge i put to vegmandan for next year its just a bit of fun

give it a go and see i bet you will be hooked when you see a giant growing on your plot

If I remember I just sowed indoors in April and planted them out in the polytunnel in early May in a bed with loads of old cow manure in it.

You'd need to set them off later if you grow them outside and hope for a good sunny summer.

The scary part is when you have a couple of fruit growing then removing the less vigourous one and then you're just down to one fruit on the whole plant in order to get one enormous one.

So if that one doesn't grow big you're stuffed, especially if like me you just grow a single plant.

The trouble is as well though the plants were so big, about 6ft wide and 20 ft long in the end they almost filled my tunnel,so that's why I'm not bothering again.

It's well worth a go though if you have enough spare space.

How about for the fun of it?
I have 100 over wintering onions, but part of the patch will have mammoth onions.
Also going to try mammoth leeks. My uncle grows them for show in the N.E, and I would really enjoy producing a large one just to be able to say That is a nice spring onion, what about this?
Never grown large veg but going to give it a go. :rendeer:

seeing dans enthusiasm and pride in his big stuff (   ) has made me and oh want to have a go next year. I dont care if the seeds are slightly more expensive, itll be worth it for the fun of it!
