Mealworms
« on: June 03, 2009, 00:35 »
Is it safe to feed chickens mealworms? (The ones they sell at pet shops)

I gave my girls shrimps and they loved them. I was wondering if I can give them mealworms.

Thanks
 ;)

They are high in protein so those that I know that give them as treats don't do it often.

mine love them and get some in the afternoon mixed in with their mixed corn. They are great to help get new hens used to coming to you.

epecially with nail varnish................... i gave my girls treats with mealworms and it became a problem, i'd have 30 of them hanging around the back door all day in hope, you couldn't walk across the yard with anything in your hand as they'd jump up and nab it, now meal worms are for poorly or off colour girlies only, although i do go out and shout mealworms and then give them pasta :tongue2:

Mine love couscous and watermelon - and will fight over the rinds for hours. My OH is now proud of his North African chickens!

Since venturing out in shorts in the last few days - they have taken to pecking the back of my legs when I'm feeding them or cleaning them out. I dread to think what would happen if I fell over...Ouch.

is it just natural yogurt or any kind of flavour you can feed them and how do you give it to them,  Where my girls came from they were only given layers pellets and i think a few scraps but they were never given mixed corn which i have been giving them, a couple of handfuls  around dinner time mainly to get them to come to me as they were very nervous but it definatley is working so would like some other treats to give them now.  We always have loads of yogurts in the fridge from the kids.    nickyx

I've always wanted to ask: how exactly do you feed yoghurt to chickens? My dogs lick it off the spoon, but a chicken... somehow I think not...

I just pop a bowl of yoghurt in their run. They eat it ok...especially if I put a teaspoon of  cod liver oil mixed in.  :D
