Title: Electric vs Petrol?
Post by: FatGaz on June 05, 2007, 17:59
Hi,

Im looking into buying some power tools for the allotment - strimmer / hedge trimmer / rotovator, etc.

There is no pwer on site, so should I go for petrol, or should I buy a generator and electric powertools?

Cheers

We have a recharchable strimmer, it's ok but dosen't have a lot of power. it's fine for short grass but not so great for tall grass. The battery doesn't last long either, 15 minutes max.

It's about 1/2 the price of a petrol strimmer but if you have the money I would go for one of those.

It appears that the electric tools are cheaper to buy than the petrol ones, but of course you also need to buy a generator as well! So this bumps up the price of the electric ones to maybe more than the petrol ones

I suppose the plus side of a generator is that you can also use it for other things, ie: kettle; lighting; drill; jigsaw, etc

I made the mistake of buying a cordless strimmer at the beginning of the spring. It cost me around £40 - the biggest disaster I have ever purchased. I made the mistake of leaving the battery on charge for longer than I should and it just mucked up the charged to the point that the charge only lasted around 5 minutes before going off.

Homebase had a 10 % day the other week and I bought a petrol strimmer of £60 - its absolutely brilliant. Strims the whole lottie no problem at all.

I also have a petrol rotovator that I got in the winter for my birthday, that too is petrol and is brilliant - I am so glad to have these two pieces of equipment because it makes those hard boring jobs easy leaving plenty time for the things I enjoy best.

hi, not been on the site for a few days and saw this, we have the same problem, petrol or generator so we went to B&Q and paid £44 for a generator, runs for about 5 hours on unleaded petrol. Now have all the power we need. Hope this helps.

I would go for petrol personally, no leads to cut through, no jenny to lug about and more power.
