Cucumber up poles question
« on: August 19, 2012, 20:08 »
So i am growing marketmore for the first time and have three plants growing up three poles.

I have been tying them to the poles and have had some cucumbers but just a few questions please.

There are loads of side shoots - do i need to snip off some of these?

There are loads of flowers - do i need to stop some of these becoming cucumbers?

Finally - the ones grown seem to be short and thick - is this the norm?!

I'd

Cut off non fruiting tendrils..

Not stop potential fruits

Short and thick? They're growing. ;)

Thank you - so you would cut out the side shoots if there where no fruits but even if there where flowers?

No, I'd leave flowers to turn into fruits, in theory. How many are you talking? The plant can support a few fruits growing at one time...

I reckon there is maybe 20-30 (of either fruits or flowers) on each plant (Maybe more) - i just didnt know if too many they may stop them growing large

I have a length of prison wire along one side of my greenhouse, my cucumbers fix themselves firmly along this.  Apart from removing yellowing or dead leaves I sort of leave them to see to themselves.  This year I only grew two plants and so far I have had 20 cucumbers, I think there will be about 3 more flowers to fruit... I water lots and feed regularly with seaweed feed and tomato feed as they are in growbags, cut in half and stood on end.  I did try poles one year and found the plants did not grip well up the poles.  I am very happy with the firm wire that the tendrils twist around.
