What is this?

My son has just moved into a house and this small bush is growing which has these fruit on. They are very hard and resemble a type of apple, especially when cut in half. I have seen a similar bush but the fruit were choclate brown with light brown flecks. The bush also has thorns. The fruit are approx 30mm across. Can anyone help please?

Yes, it is a "JAPONICA QUINCE".  A nice find indeedy!!  Makes wonderful Jam so my wife tells me.....................
