This question was asked on gardener's question time I think. Suggestions ranged from herb hanging baskets to pure lily of the valley hanging baskets. Check out Off Topic for a link to Listen Again ... I forgot how far into the programme they talked about it though.

Val puts surfinia in - they may not be exciting but they do give a wonderful mass of flowers all through the summer.
There's a couple of flowers on one in the greenhouse already.

Hi there, I used to plant up hundreds of hanging baskets when I was at work, it was my favourite job! Acid yellow/green leaves, like Lysamachia always look good with purple flowers trailing through. Heuchera is quite good in a basket, and a little different. If the baskets are truely huge, you could put a few lily bulbs in, for height, or dwarf gladioli. Fuchsias always look good, especially if you stick to the same variety in the whole basket. Scented leaf pelargoniums are nice, Orange Fizz smells rather nice! I hope that is of some help!

I put nasturtiums in some of my baskets and hay racks that are on the wall, and this year, I am going to try some of my sweet peas in hanging baskets as well, but i love trailing fuchias and loads of lobelia, ok common I know, but they are nice, and next door's last year, just had trailing petunias in theirs, but they looked lovely
