Chicks about to hatch - help needed with incy
« on: May 21, 2011, 14:33 »
Well its day 21, none have pipped yet but I can hear some chirping!!

Im so excited!! But I have a question, Im using the covatutto 24 the one with the plastic dividers and Ive suddenly become worried that the chicks wont be able to hatch out of the shell because they are wedged securely between the dividers. Should I take out the dividers? Or will they just roll around into each other if I do that?

I am not 100 % sure, but I have seen so many photos where peoples eggs are in egg box type holders in the incy. So I would assume the partitions are ok. Mine hatched last week and they did not have so much room to roll around, and they escaped just fine.

I don't have a covatutto, but I have seen them.  My hatching tray was rather full yesterday, and today, sometimes a chick has pipped all round the outside of the shell, but can't give that last little push becaus its shell is up against some others.

So I've just been moving some out of the way of others and getting rid of empty shells.  One chick today was just about out of its shell, it gave a lovely push and the top of the shell came off, then anther chick came along and promptly pushed the shell back over the other one's head!!  :D

Hope they all come out well,
I have just increased humidity for a hoped hatch tomorrow, only 12 eggs although I have been fighting the incy with temp and humidity so I hope to get a few.

My incy is lovely for temperature.  It keeps it exact to .05 of a degree, and has a BIG water tray with element for getting the humidity UP.  My only problem is trying to get the humidity DOWN!

I tried putting newspaper or kitchen towel in there to soak up the moisture, but it shoots up everytime another chick hatches.

Woke me up at 1am this morning when it shot up to 73!

You should remove the dividers - they are only there to prevent the eggs rolling around when turning.

I did remove the dividers as it looked like one was struggling, well 3 have hatched out of 6 so not a greta hatch rate but at least some hatched.

I think I need a better incubator! Ive been told to run it dry until day 18 and then put a bit of water in but one egg that I was sure was ok hasn't hatched so I must have done something wrong  :(

Well I have one polish chick and 2 Light Sussex  :)

Congratulations on your hatch Grannie Annie, tat one that pushed the shell back on the chicks head is showing its naughty streak already! Lol!

Glad to hear the hatch is going well. Don't give up on the hatching yet - they can go as far as Day26+ and still hatch!

My Brian is the same, its only day 22 and he's just said I think the rest of those eggs are duff.  Men, they are so impatient!   :D :D

It will be a surprise for him if we get anymore hatching!

You never know squiggly, the other 2 may still hatch!  Hope they are not all boys!
