Title: how to select the broad beans for first show
Post by: Sue32 on July 02, 2012, 11:11
first ever show, I have some nice broad beans, but how do I select the right ones to show?  Is it just the biggest and straightest?  does age matter - ie big fat beans but not very edible?  confused?
Do I pick them on the day?  help and advice please

Cut them as late as possible and put them in a tray with kitchen paper. Handle as little as possible. Go for an evenly matched set rather than the biggest. The judges will open one to see what is inside. Bad luck if there is a bean missing

Don't try and go for the biggest if they've gone over on condition. Nice, fresh green pods with no blemishes, well filled with beans but not overly 'beany'.....you'll know when you see them. Concentrate on getting a set all the same length, girth, shape, condition and leave as much stalk on as you can.

All the best.
