I woudn't worry about changing his name. When we rescued Bear, he was about 11 or 12 and he had bee called fluffy - he'd been living with this chav family, who upped and left him Anyway as he was a big woolly ginger boy and looked like a bear so we changed his name straight away...he responded to it no problem
