Help needed urgently
« on: July 18, 2010, 18:19 »
I went into the henhouse tonight and found one of our hens on the perch wobbling about. She is having difficulty breathing and keeps falling over. Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong with her. She was ok this morning when i did the daily clean- running around with her chick and making her usual amount of noise. Maggie

Have you got a local pet shop or wholesalers you could nip into to ask there advice you can buy alsorts of tonics to give them maybe she is lacking in some vitamins. Have you seen her eating / drinking etc.

We were out this afternoon Sally and she was fine when we left no problems with eating or drinking up until we left to go out. It is very hot here at the moment but they are Greek hens so although they all find it too hot and run around with their wings away from their bodies it doesn't seem to affect them. They all have poultry spice, acv etc and are wormed regularly with flubenvet. She is making a rasping sort of noise when she is breathing but is seems to be a real struggle for her. She seems unable to eat or drink tonight but we have given her some water with a syringe but it's making a real gurgling noise going down. I have separated her and together with her chick they are in another coop tonight. I am worried about her as i'd hate to lose her as she was our very first hen. Maggie

Can you check to see whether there is an obstruction in throat area?

Mrs. Hen died tonight. It's very upsetting as like i said already she was our very first hen. She has a 4 weekold chick. It could have been a snake bite or maybe a scorpion sting we'll never know. Thanks for all of your advice. Maggie

Thanks for all of your advice and sympathy. The chick is now nearly 6 weeks old now and doing fine. It is now in the big hen house with the rest at night although in a fenced off area inone of the bigger nest boxes as it's too small to roost.
We had 12 others hatch out 1 week ago and another 3 4 days ago from the incubator. I'm really enjoying watching them all. Maggie
