Garlic - can I grow in pots?
« on: January 08, 2009, 14:46 »
We only got out Allotment in November and havent got around to turning the soil or preparing the ground yet  :(

From my now fairly extensive reading I know it is about the right time to plant Garlic.

Is it possible for me to start them off in pots in the garage and then when we get a shed and the lottie set up plant them out?

I got a load of pots off Freecycle last night so am keen to get them all filled!!

Thanks,

Helen. :D

I don't think garlic transplants well
I'd wait until early spring, if you plant now the bulbs will just sit in cold wet soil until spring anyway and some may rot off
They need a rich soil, some dig in well rotted muck now
Garlic grows best in the UK by being planted in the autumn when the earth is warm.

I gew garlic in 3" pots the year before last, transplanted them around 2 months later. The crop was good.
I did stick them in pots a bit earlier tho, around november time.

I've grown garlic in 9" pots in the back garden before I had a lottie, they grew and thrived but were never as big as the ones from the lottie.

I've planted mine in an 18 in x 6ft raised flower bed in the garden. I got 2 bulbs, one I've planted, the other I will look to plant in April when i've dug some of the garden over, I've seconded an area of the garden 5m x 5m next to the greenhouse in lieu of an allotment plot.

Some of mine I managed to get in the ground before it froze over, others I have planted in Richey's paper pots, ready to go in pot and all when the ground thaws out again.

You've nothing to lose by planting them in pots for now then planting them out later. Garlic needs time for the roots to develop so this should help. If nothing else, at harvest time you'd still have a good, healthy single garlic clove ready to replant in the fall (rather than a head of garlic). All gardening is a learning process.
