The autumn-planted garlic is said to need frost to split well, but I'm not sure that the spring-sown varieties are the same?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

We haven't had that many decent frosts this year so I wonder how the garlic will do? It's my first year with garlic so all new to me!

I never had much luck with Spring planted garlic, that and the fact I was never very confident in the source product. Last year the garlic harvest had just gone on sale in the french markets while we were there.
I bought several cloves back with me and planted them up (individual cloves) in September. inch below the surface and so far looking very good.

My Marco garlic only grew to marble size last year. The ones I dug up were really tasty though - fat and juicy. I must have missed some in the ground and in October/November I had a short row of Marco garlic come up. I am hoping that this year those year-old cloves will turn into big bulbs!

Everything (and possibly more ::)) you could ever wish to know about growing garlic (a U.S. website but most of the info is applicable to growing in the UK.)
