Title: Garlic to grow now
Post by: whaleroad on September 22, 2021, 20:42
Hi - Can anyone please advise on where to buy garlic ready to sow now? I'm looking online but all promising products have very mixed reviews. I'm in the south-east. Thank you.

You can't go wrong with the Garlic farm on the Isle of Wight although most of the major seed suppliers should also supply a good product.  Make sure you order autumn planting varieties.

Seed garlic is expensive so once you get going it's worth saving the biggest/best bulbs from your crop for the following year.

I bought this one last year and it did really well for me.  The bulbs supplied were a good size with plenty of cloves.  It got very little attention, just a bit of weeding and the odd scatter of fertiliser now and then.  I got a good crop of decent sized bulbs.  The cloves are a pretty good size as well.  I hate peeling fiddly little garlic cloves

There is a picture of my crop in my diary here  :)

And I bought these a few years back and I have similar feedback to NS. I'm still replanting some of the cloves each year.

Another vote for rossa di Sulmona.  It is very reliable.
I have also had good success in recent years with Early Purple Wight.  I couldn't buy any this year from anywhere, but if you can get it I recommend.  I am going to plant some of my cloves from this year plus Sulmona.
