Cabbage root fly - oh no!!!!
« on: June 02, 2008, 20:54 »
Went to our plot this afternoon  and was really shocked to see two of our cabbage transplants have wilted.  They were ok yesterday when we were there.  We dug them up and they were full little maggots. We put collars round but these went in later than the first lot we put in and were just put in to fill a few spaces.  They all had collars on when they were planted into the ground.  But maybe they got it before they went into the ground.  Will it affect the rest of the crop because they are looking really lovely now. Should I start with sowing some more seeds.

Not at all likely to affect the rest, but they might as well get it, if you have the critters around, unless your collars are big and have no soil on top.

Also, ever so sometimes, but they do lay on foliage, keep an eye out.

Do you mean that we have to put soil on top of the collars did not know this.  Also what are we looking for fly wise?

No, keep soil off, or they will lay their eggs into that.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

We bought some discs from LBS supposed to be for cabbage root fly.  They were very stiff and difficult to fit onto the cabbages.  They are not that big though. Tomorrow I will go to the plot and make sure that all the collars are free of soil.  Thanks for that.

Are these this couple of inches size stiff stuff? you need wider then that, cut up some old carpet, or thick cardboard, 6 inch dia circles.

The flies are not distinguishable , little black fly like any other.

Yes they were Gobs I wasn't very happy with them I thought they were too small but they were what was being sold for root fly.  Really fed up because we have spent a lot of time getting these plants growing really strongly before we planted them out.
