Title: asparagus planting

The local green grocers has aspararagus plants for sale ,is it ok to plant them at this time of year ?,any advice very welcome.

Yes they can be planted now as you can't harvest them for about 3 years. Check that the roots are plump and numerous, otherwise, pass on them.
