Paraffin heaters

Be kind, I'm new to the Equipment Shed and am not terribly 'hands on'...

Paraffin Heaters: are they still legal?  :D

Are they a sensible heating option for a smaller greenhouse and is it possible that mine is too large - it looks like it was made for home use originally. What should I do before I use it (if I use it) in terms of a safety/maintenance check.

Picked one up off Freecycle and realised that I didn't have the foggiest what to do with it.

If it is one of the rectangular/box type ones (sounds like it might be from your description) - make sure the wicks are in good order, make sure that the vents are free from cobwebs and any other blockages and make sure it is on level ground so it doesn't tip over!

Thanks Faz, yes it is what I'd call the usual 'burner' encased in a metal box.

I'll give it a good clean up and check as you suggest. Would it make sense to replace the wicks anyway? I'm guessing the local hardware shop should stock them?

I only use my paraffin heater very early in the season, when I run out of windowledge :(
I find they are quite expensive to run, so wouldn't try to use it all winter through
No need to replace the wick as long s you clean it up, but get a new one in as they can burn down surprisingly quickly.

Be careful when you light it.....I wouldn't want you to damage your face fuzz

Thanks Mum!

I haven't even put my greenhouse up yet, but I saw it on Freecycle and thought I'd try for it anyway.

Bit scared of things that use flammable liquids, tbh.

If you weren't as dry as the gobi then you'd know far more about flammable liquids :D

You might find this recent post, from one of the darker corners of the equipment shed, worth reading ( @link: Paraffin heaters) ;)

A small word of caution --- make sure the wick always stays properly trimmed to avoid everyhting being covered with a fine film of soot

We have a brand new paraffin heater, very high tech, self lighting and will extinguish if the air is bad (poor circulation etc), you can even get one that has a computer chip which tells it to light and switch off, also a fan to distribute the heat.
Seems a bit pointless though, if you have the power for the fan then you can use less smelly electric heating.

We use ours in the house because we still get power cuts up here and we are all electric eccept for bottle gas for cooking.
