Coldframe Heaters for Greenhouse?
« on: February 18, 2007, 17:36 »
Had a look at the round coldframe heaters for my greenhouse today, they are £18.99 a piece and I read on here I think that a couple either end of the greenhouse are good for heating.

4 litres of Paraffin from our garden centre is £3.99 a go, is this good?

The heaters burn for 14 days but do not state how much fuel this is consuming, does anybody know?

that fuel will be gone in a 24 /36hour hour period . confused as to why they burn for 14 days ?. usually the burn as long as fuel is in them triage

i cannot afford to run my paraffin heater. But if you have no electric or gas they will have to do.

Are you sure there not just the "frost free" type, as usually they consume much more paraffin than this, also paraffin heaters create a lot of moisture which can lead to botrytis  and other moulds.
IMHO electric heaters are far superior as they move the air around as well as  keeping the greenhouse warm.

Got ya it's what I used to call frost free heater when I worked at B&Q. Ok if thats all you want it for. I found a couple of reviews on this website they might be useful to you. I think what you've got to bear in mind that this sort is usually fixed flame so fixed heat, probably would be ok in a greenhouse but only if in a section of it.
Hope this helps

Thanks :) do not have electric sockets yet as they cost a small fortune to have them run up the garden

Just had a discussion this morning with the project manager of this house (my husband) about the possiblility of using the water draining from the shower/bath to keep the chill off a still-to-be-built warm frame in the patio!

Might work....... :)

Hmmmm...... what do you think?

Hmmm well some details need to be worked out... such as lifting the bath a little higher to allow a secondary pool of water in the cold frame....

Okay something like this - drain from the bath (which also has a shower) is broken into and the water diverted to a coil of  widebore pipes beneath a wooden floor under the (as yet imaginary) warmframe.  After the pipe coil (before the water joins the rest of the waste water system) we would have a bend upwards that would keep the pipes full and prevent them from draining until the next bath/shower was taken.

This is why we need to raise the bath, because at the moment to keep the water in the pipes, would also keep the water in the bath.... seeing as the bath is ground level the same as the patio outside.....

Now the bathroom needs a revamp anyway so it might be trendy to have a raised bath..... ?????

Anyway the whole concept is being mulled over.... can't rush these things and all that!
