« on: March 17, 2008, 17:42 »
Hi people

She wont let me pick her up but i was going to fish her out after day wash it, dry it and put wound powder on it ....... do i need to do anything else?

it looks like she pulled the nail and its bleeding around the nail bed!

Thanks Wildone x x x

Thanks i've just managed to bathe it but it was impossible to hold her and apply wound powder on my own (she was not impressed that i'd got her up!) So i'll try again tomorrow morning when OH can help!

P.S. Didn't know that hens could growl    8)

You can wrap her up in a towel to stop her flappingand struggling.. Covering here eyes will subdue her too.  Good luck  :D

I had to trim a nail on one of my hens last week, (I know not quite the same as the actual toe bleeding) but I caught her with the clippers! That bled like Billyo, I washed it, powdered it then put her in a cage to keep her still and presto next day she was fine :)

I found a great tip for stopping bleeding toenails - light a match for a few seconds, then blow it out and press it to the nail where it is bleeding for a few seconds. It cauterises the wound very quickly and doesnt seem to cause any pain.
They can bleed far more than you would expect - it was quite scary when one of our cockerals pulled out a toe nail completely - we had to have him inside in the 'chicken hospital' (made out of the dog transport box) all night to make sure it stoppe dbleeding before putting him back out in the coop to scratch around
