Title: Tap For Water butt
Post by: pookey on July 01, 2007, 23:26
I bought a standard brass garden tap and fitted it to my waterbutt (a blue oil barrell) but no water is coming out - is this because there isnt enough pressure?  Or is there a specific type of tap I need?

I also want to make a new outdoor tap from the house supply but I need to house the tap about 20+ metres from the source (connecting to my kitchen water supply then carrying it accross the back of the house to have a tap on the opposite side of the house).  What sort of kit + pipe should I go for?

hello pookey,
i think your brass tap may have an anti flow back valve fitted in it. this is a requirment by law now, so that bacteria have a harder task infecting your water supply if the tap is fitted to your mains supply. they do take a bit more pressure than your water barrel can supply to open the valve.
you can take the valve out, or dissable it.
as for your other problem, you will need to be able to turn the water off with some kind of stop cock in the house, this is so that if you get a leak, you will be able to turn it off. also, you will need to be able to turn off the water and drain the system for the winter to stop any chance of it freezing. this WILL need to be fitted with an anti flow back valve (left operational!) :D

Thank you, I will give this a go, do I just try and break the plastic plunger thingy that pushes in and springs back in the bottom of the tap?  As for the outside tap I may just connect the tap to the kitchen and use a hose to take it round the side of the house, probably easier!
