Title: help! how to make a water butt.
Post by: kezlou on October 13, 2008, 13:28
Hi everyone
I was wondering if anyone could help me. I have just acquired some big blue barrels and i was wondering how / if  i could try and convert one into a water butt.
It has a black plastic lid on it as well.

Thanks for looking ;)

Give them a good clean and then go to B&Q or similar and buy a water butt tap drill a hole where you want it and fit the tap. Dead easy

How many other water butts do you have, if you dont mind me asking?

I'm planning to use it over the allotment but have no gutting over there, so could i leave over the top and let the rain water drop into it naturally?

tittering the cheek of it, i'd told them to boo off lol

Yes you can use bricks, all the same size is best  :D   I did my one at home on bricks

I was gonna say I had no bricks on the plot but I think I can source some quite close by as a load have been dug up. I'll ask if he'd like to donate them for the cause. He has used my watering facilities so I bet he'll be ok with it. Saves carting blocks  :D

Thank you, you've been a great help!

At the mo I have two butts in tandem, joined together with blue piping and the last one overflows into a large plastic cistern but I want to use the blue butt instead and perhaps make my pond bigger using the cistern.  I might keep it for water storage, not sure yet, but having water on the plot is great as it saves so much time and effort drawing water from the lotty butt which is a walk away from my plot and I can feel my arms getting longer every visit     I hardly ever visited the lotty butt last year as I was mostly self-sufficient water wise.

I have shed guttering and downpipe  into the first butt which is connected to the second, but lots of peeps fix guttering up and then a plastic water bottle or some such Heath Robinson affair to divert water into the butt  :D

Title: tap a bottom surely?

Sorry if I am missing the point and there is something clever about putting it at the top?

Surely the tap needs to be near the bottom to get all the water out, if the tap is at the top then the water will get stagnant at the bottom?

Otherwise won't you have to syphon the water out of the bottom?

I have three at home, and none at the allotment (have a water supply right next to me)

How about putting the tap in the middle?
That way, when you think you've run out of water, there's always a bit more
