OK, so I'm probably a bit late here, as have only just got the seed potatoes, but I'm sure they'll catch up, I've got, first earlies, second earlies, maincrop and salad - do I chit ALL of them? (have a feeling I read somewhere not to chit some, but can't remember what!, but could also be having a blonde moment and imagining I read that!)

I chit 'em all, saves having to worry which is which    but I think it's earlies you do and main you don't have to.

Hi Angelah,no panic there is plenty of time.Let them chit for 4 weeks and they will be fine.1st earlies only need 9/10 weeks to provide a decent crop.If you dont plant them until early april they will be ready by middle of June.Chit them all and plant them all at the same time.

Half of my spuds look ready to go, they've been chitting for about 4 weeks now and have massive shoots.
Should I hold back or is it ok to plant them out??

Gardeners World did an experiment of half chitted, other half not about 2-3 years ago.  Guess what - I don't think it made any difference

how do you actually chitt potts leave them in the light , wet them what ? last year did'nt bother just planted them all at the same time because i did'nt know how and i still dont so i thought i would ask thanks. :roll:  p,j,

A cool and light place is what you need PJ   don't wet them !

You can get the trays from green grocers and they stack at the mo I have 4 stacked in the utility room and a large salad box in the kids bed room chitting away, about 160 ish tubers  :oops:

yip thats what i thought got about 6 of them blue trays but may need more  :!:  but thanks for expaining it to me   now i know how thanks ,i have also been saveing egg trays so its time to start chittin i suppose thanks p,j,

Many thanks for all the replies - have started all the potatoes off in the utility room and will sort the allotment out for when they're ready. Am really looking forward to some fantastic fresh potatoes come the summer!
