Hi All

This might sound like a silly question but I honestly have no idea what I'm doing!

I have cleared the first part of my first allotment and it is (give or take!) ready for planting. I've been told that this time of year is a little late to plant seeds so I should look at germinated veg. So, I'm about to head out to the garden centre and grab some onions, pumpkin, courgettes and maybe a couple of tomatoe plants.

But, how should I prep the ground? Do I fork in some manure or just leave it on top? Is it worth watering the ground before or after planting ( I live in SE London and we've had nice weather all week - rained last a couple of days ago).

i always plants my courgettes and pumpkins in a pile of horse manure, i dig a hole, put the manure in then plant the plant in it.

everything you plant will need watering after you plant it.

i think you are too late for onions as mine are nearly ready to come up, you will be able to get some onion sets in a few months for planting in oct/nov time for over wintering

You can get some carrots in still and some swedes if you are quick and have the seeds. You could pop in some lettuce and some fennel too. You might even be able to get some beetroot going.

All you need is a few packets of seeds with the instructions on the back.
