What to do with recently cleared space?
« on: May 04, 2014, 16:18 »
Hi all, I'm a newbie to gardening and got my plot in August last year. It was very overgrown but I've been clearing and planting it slowly. I was digging up an area today and it was filled with nails, bits of carpet, plastic and lots of roots that I was told might be bindweed. I was thinking that I might put some green manure down on this area and cultivate it next year. Someone suggested that I plant squash or potatoes, as I've got it covered in weed suppressing fabric. So, should I plant a food crop or should I leave it and try to improve the soil for next year?

Thanks :)

Welcome to the site  :D

Squash or courgettes will cause you to cut fewer holes in the weed suppressant membrane, if that's relevant to your plans.

Do you already have spuds planted and/or space for courgettes etc?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I had a very similar situation last year. I got to the point where I just couldn't do any more digging and clearing of ground.
I bunged a bit of manure on the ground, covered the lot with weed suppressive fabric and planted a few squash through it. They grew like mad, I got a great crop and didn't have to worry about the patch for the year. This year I have taken up the fabric, the grass and weeds that were under it have all died off and I'm ahead of the game for this year with a lot less digging!
