Planting my newly arrived Asparagus
« on: April 10, 2014, 22:36 »
Hi, I wonder if you could help me with a couple of queries I have.

1. My crowns have arrived and I cannot plant until Saturday, where should I keep them.  On one USA site it said in the fridge

2. When planting I thought of using Rootgrow Mycorrhizal Fungi would it help/make no difference/be bad for it?

Many thanks  :D

This is the instruction that came with mine

"Unpack your crowns immediately. Trim off any broken or damaged roots and, if they look dry, soak them for an hour or so in a bucket of water. Aim to plant out as soon as possible.
If it is necessary to delay planting for any reason, crowns can be kept for a few days in a cool but frost-free place, such as a shed, if covered with damp material, such as newspaper or sacking. They must not be allowed to dry out."

Don't know about the mycorrhizal fungi, but I wouldn't think it would do it any harm.

The fungi will help growth a lot, and if you have then I heartily recommend using it.

To use, dampen the root, shake off excess water, dip rootlets into the powder, shake off excess and plant by spreading apart the rootlets and set the crown on a mound of sand. This really helps minimize crown rot in wet weather.

Don't do what I was shown today in a garden. Old chap proudly showing me his newly planted asparagus, only he had planted them upside down and the roots were sticking up in the air. Afraid I laughed.  ::)

He also laughed when I pointed out his error, told him how to plant them correctly.
