Title: Dogs on beds
Post by: tosca100 on December 11, 2011, 07:25
I hate it! I don't even like dogs in bedrooms. In 17 years My old dog never slept in my bedroom. But OH used to have his lurchers on his bed (one roomed flat so no choice but to have them in the room) and he eventually got his way to let Bonnie lab sleep upstairs when she was upset with fireworks but definitely not on the bed! Hate it! Now of course Bella couldn't be left downstairs (though she managed for a year, till the dreaded fireworks hit again)

Occasionally, for a special treat they are allowed up for a short cuddle, which is usually a wriggle as they vie for best positions, though they can never decide which body is best for cuddles. With OH away again, I thought if I fed the little darlings early and went back to bed I could have a lie in. As a treat I invited them up, after making sure I was central in a kingsize bed with masses of duvet available, so I settled with Bonnie beside me and Bella along my legs.

So how did I end up teetering on the very edge? With Bonnie contentedly wiffling in my ear and Bella using my legs as a pillow. They didn't seem to move but they must have just pushed me over trying to get closest. Gave up at 5 and got up, with excruciating back ache, and took them out for a run. They are now happily dozing in front of the fire while I am wide awake with a hot water bottle on my back! >:(

I know someone who has two labs and two lab/mastiff crosses, and a partner, all on the bed. She says it's not a problem, they all know their place. There must be times.................

We used to have the dogs sleeping in the bedroom but when we got Ollie we decided to keep her downstairs. Charlie is now too old and sometimes struggles to manage the stairs so she now sleeps downstairs too. On the rare occasion when having a lie in and they both manage to sneak upstairs I find myself in the same position as you - one dog (a mastiff) on my head and the other (Newfoundland X across my legs and both of them snore louder than a steam train. They manage to sleep perfectly ok unlike me  :(

It does take practise    ...  try again tonight

(I have cats - small, soft and squashable, so I have to be careful that OH nor I roll on them ...  They still occupy the centre half   8))

I also hate dogs on beds but i must have the dogs in the bedroom on their own beds.

I think its part of the pack thing. The whole pack retires to the sleeping quarters together, the pack leaders- me and OH 8) - have the best bed in the highest position looking down on the rest of the pack.  Sometimes if one or both of the pack leaders is having a lie in or is a bit poorly they  can invite  one of the lower ranks to share the top spot but it must be only on invitation, whinging at the side of the  pack leaders bed gets a sharp 'Back on your bed' with no negotiation.

Ah madcat, I remember having the most awful nights sleep and waking up pinned to the bed with an 18lb tabby on my chest (RIP Moose)!  I now fight for space with Izzy as his half is not big enough for him to sleep horizontally across the bed!  :D

I'd so love my lab to sleep on my bed more but she does this only now and then. There is no more beautiful a sound than sleeping labrador breathing in the night...... ;)

I don't mind dogs in the room, but definitely not on the bed. I've been sorely tempted recently with the Border Collie being so frightened of the weather noises, but have resisted temptation.

 :) :) :) yeh, it works

It sleeps with its eyes half open like my old beardie used to

I like it when you and them have been out working or for a walk, come in cream crackered and crash out on the sofa in front of the fire with the dog. That lovely smell of cold damp dog warming up is heavenly, and I do agree, the breathing sound is so soothing  No sure about snoring tho :D

That was lovely Tosca. Our cat used to love to sneak in between OH and I - but she used to wait until we were asleep before doing it - just to surprise us.  :)

  That reminds me of my old german shepherd but he was definitely not on the bed. I've never let dogs on the bed as for one thing I wouldn't sleep a wink.

However, I remember one very cold night when a young G.S bitch sneaked up the stairs, quiet as a mouse, and I woke to find her stretched out beside me with her head on the pillow! Luckily she was too young to snore.

aaaah tosca. doesn't she look peaceful. ;)

Our scruffy terrier jumps on the bed when OH gets up for work at 5.00 a.m. in the warm spot.

Trouble arises on his 2 days off.  He still gets up at 5.00 a.m., goes for a cuppa and then back to bed by which time old Scamp is snoring his head off and OH cant get him off the bed so he can get back in.  I believe there is usually a low growl from the nomally placid Scamp and a bit of name calling by the OH until he can get back into bed.  I don't hear any of this as I am in the land of nod and wake up to find Scamp on my side, gripping to the edge of the bed with his paws, refusing to go back on the lovely cushion he has in the room.

Dogs  -  who'd have 'em... Bless 'em  :)  :)  :)

The cats are heavy enough on the bed and I rarely sleep well when they're on. No way do the dogs get up while we're in bed! My current lab x collie sneaks on when we're not there but she knows she's not supposed to be on the bed. She can sleep anywhere on the bedroom floor and I often wake up to a cold nose stretched across my pillow to lick me soon as I open my eyes. Yuk.

When I was a teenager we had a shetland sheepdog (mini Lassie dog).  He slept in the kitchen overnight but Dad had a tried and tested technique for getting me and my brother up in the morning before he left for work.

He'd open our bedroom doors and you had approximately 2 seconds to get your face under the duvet before a wet doggy tongue got enthusiastically stuck up your nostril

My spaniel snores worse than my dad and fidgets worse than someone who has ants down their pants so I definitely wouldn't let him on the bed.   The old fella now can't get up on the bed but when he was younger and snuck up he took over so he got banned as well.  Instead they take over all 3 sofas I've got downstairs -I'm allowed a little corner to sit on :D

Tosca - agree with your original post - no dogs on beds. Actually as far as I'm concerned dogs have their own detached houses - I don't go into theirs and they don't come into mine!

Bizkit is the dog's name and is famous on youtube with a lot of videos.

My own dogs often have puppy dreams where they're chasing something and will whine and paddle away. Makes me wonder what must go on in dog heaven  :D

As per The Far Side cartoon - a van made entirely of ham and dogs chasing it across a field taking the occasional bite......

I don't have a dog, but I do share my bed with two cats.  Now given that my matress is 160cm wide, I always end up being pinned between two furry bodies with no room to move!

i wouldn't have it any other way though... my two living hot water bottles    :D

My Border terrier who died last year was a great character and a wonderful dog but he didn't get any farther into the house than the kitchen and definitely not upstairs!

The farming side of my family don't have dogs in the house but I can't see the point of having one if they are never with you in the house.

I get a jolt of pleasure every time I look around and see her.  Across my lap on the sofa is heavenly (and warm), the sound of paws on the treads on her way up the stairs and hearing the bedroom door open is wonderful but bed is the ultimate joy!

You are allowed space on the bed?!?! This was just the four - the other five hadn't come in for bedtime yet.....

In all seriousness this lot are not allowed in the bedroom at night. The little black and white one on the left (Cassipuss) is even know to "Cassipush" you off the bed. How one so small manages it is beyond me, but he will take over the entire bed regardless of who else is in it!

All my five (was six until recently) have the option to sleep on the bed with us.  I have to admit it does get painful at times with claws in backs, fluffy trousers in faces etc but generally i love it.  The wimpy lurcher and the terrier sleep UNDER the duvet to!

It does take a bit to keep the covers washed etc but theres nothing like waking up to a face wash

Ouch - this is the reason we no longer allow the dogs on the bed:-

whenever Ollie gets frightened she tries to leap on me and get as close as possible so I can protect her and this was part of the result of her being frightened two days ago (she is a huge Neapolitan Mastiff who simply doesn't fit on my knees anymore  ::))

We have always had our dogs upstairs with us at night... However, the next dog I get will always sleep downstairs.  It's heart breaking watching them trying to get up the stairs when they can no longer manage it  :(  Our Springer at the age of 15 struggles with the stairs now, we are going to get a stair gate to stop her coming up.  She will be sad about it for a while but it's better than her keep falling down the stairs!!

I do have a cat that sleeps with me though!

And having met mine you know there would not be much room left for us two!

Bella is a real trier though, she can get on the bed without you realising it, her downfall is she likes to press against you, which is why I end up on the edge....They have a huge new fluffy bed to share now, which they love. :)

This worries me too, but the reason Bonnie lab started to sleep upstairs was because of the fireworks which go on forever in October and November. Couldn't stand the hurt look when we tried to send her downstairs. There is never a peep out of them all night, even when you go to the loo,,,,as long as you don't flush, because that means breakfast!

My old boy's place was always the top of the stairs but although he can make it up the stairs he often falls down them now, but he has a quilt to sleep on at the bottom of the stairs now and ever since that was introduced he often can be found there.  I can fully emphasize with the stair gate Nicki85.

Still can't believe you lot have all these animals on your beds at night !!  I take it partners are agreeable to this :D.

Nah, she banished me and the moggies years ago with false accusations of snoring! The cats never complain so that's obvious nonsense.

Loudest snorer we ever had in the house (with the exception of my mother) was a white fluff ball of a very proper lady cat.  She always turned her head upside down to sleep in her preferred place of a shelf in the open fronted wardrobe ....  lovely magnifying acoustics!  :D

We have 2 cats (Bongo and Bear) and 1 dog (Theia), a Saluki.  Theia sometimes starts the night on the bed but soon gets grumpy when we move and gets off onto her own bed on the bedroom floor (well it is my bed and I will move if I want to  :tongue2: ) – she is allowed on for morning cuddles though, she lies in the crook of OH’s legs and rests her head over his thighs eyeing up my half – she usually jumps in it as soon as I get up!

Bear is usually quite an aloof cat but she races me upstairs to have a bedtime cuddle whilst I read for a while, or until Bongo comes in all ‘demanding’ (she’s very much a lap cat/mummy’s girl!) and sits on her head to make her move and get closer to me – then I’m stuck with Bong for the rest of the night and usually wake up with her face next to mine.  Bongo and the OH snore too, I’ve spent many a night nudging them to make them stop so I can get to sleep… wouldn’t have it any other way though  :D

Last week's QI (Stephen Fry and co) said how bad it is to allow dogs on beds.  We can't fight off doggy infections so well.  Will probably still take the risk though.

Our two (a border terrier and a flatcoated retriever) are 'supposed' to sleep in their beds on the bedroom floor. Invariably the wee one jumps on the bed in the middle of the night and snuggles in - this isn't a problem. The problems arise when Harley (the flatcoat) thinks this is a great idea and you wake with a paw landing on your stomach - he's promptly told to get off... then goes round the other side and gives OH 'slurpies' on the face - at which point I have been known to chortle quietly.  ::)

Badger is only allowed upstairs to catch mice ( which we had in a bedroom one night )  !!  Could not sleep with him on the bed mainly for the reason of being allergic to him ( although that has diminished greatly) and he also quite often seems to be chasing rabbits in his sleep!!!
