Whose egg do you think it was?
« on: September 03, 2011, 09:08 »
Out of 7 hens we have 2 bantams, 1 has been broody on an off for the last 4 months the other has gone through a moult and as far as we know hasn't laid for ages.

Last week we found the smallest egg we have ever had under the broody, (sorry can't upload pic) as she was lifted out.  As we marvelled at the size of it we wondered whose it was.
We ruled out the broody and decided it was the other bantam's first in a while.

We also have 3 call ducks which are 4 months old, so the dilema is, would the egg have been from one of the ducklings or are they too young, and would they dare to go into the chicken coop and lay in the nesting box next to the broody who hatched them?

I should also add that when OH cracked it for breakfast there wasn't a yoke, just the white.  Any suggestions or opinions would be welcome.  Thanks
3 dogs now, 2 passed RIP Poppy and Paige, one wonderful husband and a new adventure on this wonderful island

It sounds like a wind egg.  They can occur at the beginning or end of a laying cycle.  Sounds like one of your bantams could be starting to lay again.
11 bantams (and counting!) 2 dogs 1 cat
