You keep mentioning the expense of an Eglu HF

OK, a slightly larger initial outlay than a good quality wooden coop.

£290 for an Eglu classic without a run.

The eglu will last for at least 30 years so overall cost about £10 per year - mine is 6 years old and exactly like new, I could sell it tomorrow for at least £200.  Who wants to buy second hand wooden coops with the passengers they may contain ?

One drop of washing up liquid every month to give it a wash out - never needed any red mite chemical treatment which can be expensive.  I do use a little diatom just to be sure.  5Kg has lasted me 6 years so far.  It takes me about 20 mins once a month to clean it out and about 10 seconds each morning when I open the pop hole to remove any overnight poos.  Very low maintenance

I think it's longevity a lack of need of expensive chemical makes it ideal and very cost effective for the back garden keeper.

I love mine and wish I could have a whole collection of them. Mine also isn't a pretty pastel colour but a super vibrant blue bought second hand from one of Aunties neighbours. The only time I use the run is when I have a broody hatch chicks in the eglu and for this I have the chick attachments  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

My husband is an Engineer too but he always has to overdo everything. If you want an Eglu with 3 hens in it we'd end up with a 20 foot shed made of the thickest timber on earth and the thickest wire. It would look like a prison camp  :D  It would also take 20 years to build  :nowink:

So, I went for the easiest route and did it myself and Operation Chookville was completed within the day and not a broken fingernail in sight  :D

Well done CQ.   I'm a little more time driven than that possibly too much as I'm often accused of being overly driven on deadlines.  Comes from being in the computer chip design business where missing a deadline usually meant losing out to a competitor.
